Biodiversity: How can people help about issues of biodiversity

In our class we having been doing research on topics we are interested in and how we can make an impact on our classmates, community and people everywhere in the world with the topics we choose. I decided to mainly focus on Biodiversity and explored how people can help issues of how we can protect our planet Earth. It is an issue that still needs to be addressed in order for us and other living things to live in a world where we can enjoy a safe, peaceful and healthy environment. We also want to create a world where plants, trees, terrestrial and marine animals have a place they can call home and live at peace as well.

First of all, what is biodiversity? And what is our overall goal for biodiversity?

Biodiversity is the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable. According to the Global goals, goal 15 “…our goal for biodiversity is to sustain and manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.”

But the question is, why does it really matter to us? And the reasons why this topic really matters to us are:

    • Forests cover nearly 31 percent of our planet’s land area. From the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat – forests sustain us.
    • Around 1.6 billion people depend on forests for their livelihood.
    • Almost 75 percent of the world’s poor are affected directly by land degradation.
    • Forests are home to more than 80 percent of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects
    • And of the 8,300 animal breeds known, 8 per cent are extinct and 22 per cent are at risk of extinction..

But really, this is not all because the list goes on. Below is a pie chart where you can see how I’ve organized these reasons and see how much they really matter

As I’ve continued doing my research, I came upon the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. I looked through their sustainable development goal 15 which is “Life on Land.” Upon reading their goals for sustainable development for biodiversity, I decided to also include some of their goals to see what they plan to do. And they are:

    • “By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.
    • By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.
    • By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world”….. etc        (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals)

Before

After

Before

After

Before

After

But the list goes on. I did this because, I think it is a good idea to have a sense of what the UN is planning on doing for this issue.

But the most important part of this research is answering the question: How can people help with issues about Biodiversity? And I’ve found a lot of different types of ideas but some of them are quite common and easy such as recycling. And the answers to this question are:

  • Recycling, eating a locally-based diet that is sustainably sourced, consuming only what we need, and limiting energy usage through efficient heating and cooling systems
  •  Respecting wildlife and taking part in ecotourism opportunities that are responsibly and ethically run in order to prevent wildlife disturbance
  • Being sustainable with seafood
    • 80% of the world’s biodiversity lives in the sea, and there is still much to be discovered. At least 100 million unnamed species live on the ocean floor alone. Yet beneath the ocean’s surface there are constant scenes of absolute and utter destruction

Genius Hour Reflection 2

Ancient Chinese Clothing In The Song And Ming Dynasties

For my second genius hour I decided to do research on Ancient Clothing in the Song and Ming Dynasties. The reason why I chose that topic is because I really enjoy learning about history, especially ancient history like ancient Egypt or ancient Greece and I thought that maybe I could do some research on something that I am really interested in learning. But I mainly focused on women clothing.

Ancient Egypt (Marvin)

The Parthenon #parthenon #acropolis #athens #grecia #greece

Ancient Greece (Mark)

I learned that in Song dynasty was the first ever Chinese government to establish a permanent navy, was known as the first to use gun power, and they were also the first discernment of true using compass. And in the Ming Dynasty which was the follow up of the collapse of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty and was said to be “one of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in history”.

In the Song Dynasty, women had a variety of different clothing for the upper and lower body. They had clothing like: shirt-jackets, coats, gowns, Beize, big and short sleeves and much more for the upper and lower body.

Second in the Ming dynasty, women wore collars with narrow sleeves during the time which made up most of the upper body clothing. They also wore pleated skirts which made their clothing more graceful. And also light colored cloths were popular at the time.

I don’t think this helped me grow as a person, but I think this give me the opportunity to learn something that I wouldn’t learn in my history class but also it give me a sense of what thinks looked like and how thinks worked in the ancient times. But also I am glad to learn something about Ancient China.

Twitter Expert Connect Part 1 and 2 Reflection

For the last two months, our class has been connecting with experts on twitter like authors, experts in history etc, but not celebrities for our second Genius Hour Presentation . So in part one we had to follow 10 experts that were related to our genius hour presentation, and the ones I followed who are connected to my Genius Hour presentation are  ,   ,  ,  ,  ,  ,  , and . Which all some how connect to Ancient Chinese Clothing. Some thing like the picture below:

File:Emperor's 12-sign semiformal dragon robe, view 1, China, 18th century, silk, gold thread, embroidery - Royal Ontario Museum - DSC04462.JPG

Emperor’s 12-sign semi formal dragon robe

After adding them in our lists, every time before class begins we had to tweet a summary of our Twitter Expert Connect list, retweet a post from one of our expert connect list and @mention a different person in our expert connect list. At first I really didn’t understand why we had to that every time , I always thought we were doing it for nothing at all. But later I understood that if we didn’t do that and randomly started asking questions to our expert connect, they would either block us or spam us.

So far I’ve  only asked questions to @MongolsSilkRoad and @RAS_Soc.  And the questions I asked @MongolsSilkRoad are: Dear I am a student working on a project about Ancient Chinese clothing from the Song to the Ming dynasties and I would like to ask: What type of silk did they use in the Song dynasty?  And this information would help me in my Genius Hour presentation because then I can differentiate the silk between the Song and Ming dynasties. And : Dear , Thank you again for responding to my question last time. I found some interesting things from that file. I would really like to know: What was the difference between the silk the nobles used and the peasants used?

And the question I asked @RAS_Soc is : Dear , I am a student, and I have been working on a project called Ancient Chinese clothing changed from the Song dynasty to the Ming dynasty and I would like to ask: What is it in the Ming Dynasties clothing that changed the most since the Song Dynasty?

In the end I got some positive and negative responds because even though my experts answered my questions which was good because that meant that if I ever needed help again they would be their to help if they can but some of their answers didn’t help because it had nothing to do with my project. But I think if I were to ever use this again for school work I would because it is also another way to get primary sources and more useful information.

SBC8.2 Let’s play a game or two

Hello everyone, this weeks blog post would be the last one. I would like to say even though this was my first time blogging, really enjoyed it. So in this weeks post I visited 3 blogs from the #17stubc on Flipboard and so I am going to mention the post I read and the comments I left. And at the end of the post I will leave a link to their blog so if you have any question about their blog you can visit their blog.

Jori’s blog

In Jori’s blog she talks about bullying and Jori also talks about what you could do if you were a victim from bullying instead of reporting them.

Comment

Hi Jori,
I really liked your post about “Bullying”. I really like the part where you talk about why they end up bullying someone. I also like
the part where you give suggestions of what you could do if your a victim from bullying or not. It shows that even though you are a victim from bullying you still want to become their friend and to understand what that person has goon through. This really shows that your a really kind and incredible person. And that’s really amazing.

Sincerely,
Mariama

Genius Hour Reflection

For the last three months, we had been working on our Genius hour presentations in our Digital citizen class. We had to look for something we were interested in and do more research on it. And after that we did a presentation in class, talking about what we learned from our research. And my research topic was ” The Necessities to specialized as a Pediatrician. Why did you choose it? The reason why I chose this topic is because it has always been my dream to become a Pediatrician. So I wanted to learn more about what are the things you need to from High school to Med school in order to specialized as a Pediatrician.

What was my Research Question? My research question was “What is necessary to be specialized as a Pediatrician”. I learned that starting from high school, you should take classes like Biology, Chemistry and Physics. But also Math class which one of the most important. You should volunteer at a local hospital or clinic to be experienced in the field. But also apply for a research or experiential internship program for high school students.

Did what I help me grow as a person or a student? Well I think it helped me grow as student because it helped me decide whether I really want to do this of if it is too much for me and if I should consider changing my career chose. Did what I learn help (the world, community, animals, etc.) in some way? Well I don’t think so because what I learned helped me as a person and a student to make better chooses in the future in what I want to do after I finish school. And finally how will what you learn in the next Genius Hour help the world, community, yourself, animals, etc. in some way? And I think for my next project it will my classmates understand more about ancient clothing.

P.S: Please leave a comment down below, and say tell me what you thought of this post. I will leave the link of my presentation so you can have a look.

SBC5 What I will be doing once I leave school

Hi Guys, today I am going to talk about what I want to be a doctor. I hope you like it. And don’t forget to leave a comment down below.

When it comes to deciding want to be when I leave school, I would always say I want to be a doctor, and that is because I find it amazing they save life every day, but not only that, they are really inspiring, they wouldn’t give up you even on the most critical times because some how they know you are going to make it. But that is not the only reason I want to be a doctor, I have this disease I’ve had since I was born and I still have it, and is still going through some check ups. So I know what it feels to always be sick and take since I was a baby, so I have decided that when I grow up I want to become a doctor and help people sicknesses like mine and many more, and tell them there will always be a way to save you and I am not going to give up on them.

Even though I know to become a doctor, I have to be really good in math and science especially math. But the only problem math is one of my weak subjects. I some even think of giving up because of that, but I always keep reminding myself that I should not give up no matter what. So I am going to work as hard as can to make my dream come true.
